(Air) Fried Masala Fish

Air Fryer Masala FishI have been working on this Air Fried Masala Fish for a couple of weeks. It is simple, flavorful, and just perfect for today’s lunch. It uses everyday white fish fillets. Yes, the Costco kind, and a few key spices. It is air fried.

Origins of this Air Fryer Masala Fish

The combination of herbs and spices are from the classic deep fried version of Amritsari fish from Punjab. In my version, I ditch the batter and the deep frying, and come up with this lighter and very lively version.

Getting that gluten free crunch on the air fryer masala fish

So, what took me some time was to get something that gave the fish a healthy crunch. I have finally settled for powdered and flaked almonds. Healthy and gluten-free, so how can you go wrong. However, for me of the selling proposition is that it is ridiculously easy and works well for a week night or in today’s case for Sunday lunch.

A long crazy sort of week has found its way into a really need to slow down kind of Sunday. I discovered The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and enjoyed quite a few of the episodes. Great humor, what a beautiful actress and those clothes. All of this, and I am glad to find a fish recipe that takes very little time, looks great and tastes great!

Air Fried Masala Fish

Simple and Essential Spices

As with a lot of my recipes, this one is made with a few easy to find spices. The fish marinates in a spice and oil base. The great thing about the air fryer is that most of the excess oil drops off, leaving your with crisp well seasoned fish. I am serving this over a simple pulao from the Instant Indian cookbook. You can serve this over anything that suits your fancy. I have used flounder and tilapia for this recipe and have found good cosistent results with both.

Almond Crusted Fried Masala Fish

A well seasoned and easy to make air fried fish dish.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds any firm while fish fillets, patted dry
  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon Fenugreek leaves
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons amchoor powder or use lemon juice after air frying
  • 2 tablespoons ground almonds (see note)
  • To finish
  • Extra lemon juice
  • Chopped coriander leaves
  • Sliced almonds

Instructions

  1. Set the fish aside in a mixing bowl.
  2. In a small bowl mix together the oil turmeric, cayenne, salt, fenugreek leaves, cumin and amchoor powder.
  3. Mix in the ground almonds.
  4. Pour the mixture over the fish and toss a few times to coat. Let the fish rest for 15 to 20 minutes.Press a few time to let the almonds and spices coat the fish.
  5. Place the fish in the air fryer basket. Cook for 10 minutes at 450 degrees. Turn and cook on the other side.
  6. Carefully remove the fish, sprinkle with extra lemon juice, chopped cilantro and a few sliced almonds.
  7. Serve as a snack or over rice as a meal.

Notes

If you are air frying most of the oil drops off. If you do not have an air fryer you can shallow fry the fish. If you do not have amchoor powder, you can sprinkle the fish with extra lime juice. If you can it is good to grind the almonds yourself as almond meal can be very fine, this is optional but adds a nice texture.
